Every year, we gather hundreds of runners and walkers to participate in our SIDS Awareness 5k, but this year is going to be a little bit different.
In honor of our 5th Anniversary, we are announcing some big changes that we think you will be very excited about—starting with our goal of exceeding 1000 participants! Of course, there will still be prizes, free t-shirts, and our Kids' Fun Run. Scroll through the page below to see all of our improvements!
Together, we can reach our goal of 1000 runners/walkers and be one step closer to a SIDS-free future.
Please help us spread the word!

In honor of the 5th Anniversary of the SIDS Awareness 5k and of the countless community members who have supported us in our mission of working towards a SIDS-free future, we have some special announcements and events that we are excited to share with you all! The After-Party Celebration will officially begin after the 5k concludes, so stick around!
Of course, this event will be very family-friendly, as always! We really wanted to make sure that there was something to do for every age group attending our 5k. That being said, we will have both a balloon artist and a paint-on tattoo artist for the kids.
We are proud to be featuring awesome live music from Erica Blinn! She has a very country-rock sound and stays true to her Midwestern roots. You can check out her website here.
For lunch, we think you will love the food trucks we have lined up to sell their best dishes! The first, Pitabilities, sells fresh gyros, sandwiches, starters, and (of course) pita dishes. To add some diversity, we also arranged for Land Yacht BBQ to be there to offer you their perfected BBQ meals from their classic 1963 Airstream Overlander Land Yacht Travel Trailer (it's a mouthful, we know!).
You can also expect appearances from Senator Shannon Jones and Columbus City Council President Andy Ginther to share what they’re doing to lower our infant mortality rate. Not only have they been huge supporters of research into SIDS and SUID, but they have also been personally invested in the efforts of Baby Will. That being said, we are very excited to see their welcoming faces on race day and to hear what they have to say about the current efforts into the cause.
We will also be selling Beat SIDS Beer in Brewmasters Gate and a portion of every sale from the World of Beer Cart goes to Baby Will.
We hope you choose to join us for the family-friendly After Party Celebration!
Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, also known as SIDS, remains one of the most serious medical problems. In the US alone, a child is lost to SIDS every 4 hours, meaning more kids die from SIDS each year than from all forms of cancer combined. In fact, according to the National Center for Health Statistics, the state of Ohio ranks 48th out of 50 states for total infant deaths and 49th out of 50 states for African-American babies. The purpose of the SIDS Awareness 5k is to combat that ranking, educating our community about the risk factors of SIDS and spreading awareness of Safe Sleep. To find out more about SIDS, visit our SIDS Information page.
As a 501(c)3 organization, Baby Will aims to rally our local community in support of a SIDS Free Future. Proceeds from the 5k go to help local families impacted by SIDS and to support medical research.
This slogan has special meaning stemming from the first week after baby Will passed away, and it is something we talked about in Will’s eulogy. It was a healing moment when we considered the difference between “moving on” and “moving forward.” This distinction continues to give us strength and our hope is it serves as an uplifting metaphor for others running or walking for such an important cause.
The following is a basic schedule of events.
9:30 am Check-In Begins
10:30 am Kids' Fun Run Takes Off
11:00 am SIDS 5k Run and Walk Begin
12:00 pm After-Party Celebration and Awards Ceremony
As much as we liked our prior course, this one offers a more scenic route and fits the time frame we were hoping for! The new 5k course will begin around World of Beer and Shadowbox Live, go down Front Street, through the Scioto Audobon Park, and back.
What’s great about the course:
What makes the course challenging:

*Prizes do not accumulate. We are trying to spread the love. So if you win 1st place overall it does not add to winning your age group, rather the next fastest time in your age group will win that age group.
Please note that the course was entirely different last year. This course will include street and park terrain, increasing difficulty. For more information on the new course, see our Location section.
Without the financial support from our sponsors, the SIDS 5k could not make the impact that it does in raising funds for research and assisting local families. We are very proudly supported by our community leaders and by the following companies:
Our events draw hundreds of passionate local consumers, and we still have great sponsorship opportunities available for this year. If you are interested in learning more you can visit our SIDS 5k Sponsorship Page or simply send an email to email@example.com and we will connect with you promptly to discuss the options.
T-shirt size charts and designs can be seen here.
All event packets ordered before July 27 are guaranteed to come with the a t-shirt. But, if you missed the deadline, we will do our best to set you up with one given the time restrictions!
Race packet pickup will be available beginning Friday, July 25 at 4pm at the Second Sole store in Gahanna:
We are looking for volunteers for both the planning and execution of our annual 5k, divided into the following teams:
Marketing and Promotions Team:
Volunteers will work with one another to develop marketing strategies, deliver action items (posters, digital banners, etc.) and ensure that awareness for our event is widespread. Please keep in mind that the scale of this event is large, as our target goal for participants is 1000, so we appreciate as many minds as possible!
Event Day Team:
Race Day volunteers will be handling set-up, on-site registrations, food/beverage tables, water stations, and tear-down. If you are interested in heading any of the previously mentioned race-day volunteer groups, let us know!
To sign up as a volunteer, feel free to call (614) 906-WILL (9455) or email our volunteer organizer at firstname.lastname@example.org.
If you have any questions that you couldn't find the answer to above, we would love to help you out! You can email us at email@example.com or call at (614) 906-WILL (9455) and we would be more than happy to answer your questions.
